Blown Away

Blown Away

This is a different perspective on the same structure that I posted in Overflow a few days ago. With a little trial and error I was finally able to line up the direction of the clouds with the angle of the pylon. Other than a massive amount of spot removal (the wind was blowing dust everywhere) processing was pretty straightforward, after a few adjustments in Lightroom I passed the frame through Topaz Black and White Effects then Denoise....

Overflow

Overflow

This is an image that I shot a few weekends ago at South Holston Lake. The tower is actually a ‘head-on’ view of one of the enormous pylons that surround the overflow intake adjoining South Holston Dam. The entire structure is massive and is surrounded by a 10-foot fence topped with barbed wire and signs warning of a 250-foot drop to the bottom. The base of the intake is probably 15-feet high and there are at least six of these...

High and Dry

High and Dry

This weekend was marked by heavy cloud cover in our area which made for some great daytime shooting. What made it better, for me anyway, was the high winds that set in on Sunday afternoon. After spending the morning shooting streams in the mountains I decided to close out the day with some long exposure shooting by the lake. I’ve had a shot like this in mind since I bought my filter kit several months ago but the right circumstances of...

Belly of the Snake

Belly of the Snake

There are some advantages to the sun going down so much earlier in the evening, it provides more opportunities to get in long exposures. This is an image of South Holston Lake with 421 Bridge looming overhead taken around 6:30pm. During the summer months this shot is not possible because the water level is so high there is no place to setup. Highway 421 is locally known as The Snake because of its continuous curves as it crosses Holston...

Linn Cove Viaduct at Sunrise

Linn Cove Viaduct at Sunrise

The Linn Cove Viaduct is one of the man-made wonders of the southeast United States. The viaduct carries the Blue Ridge Parkway across the boulder fields of Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina and was the last portion of the parkway to be completed. I had hoped to grab this same shot a few weeks ago when the autumn colors were at their peak but missed my opportunity. This view can only seen from one large boulder with just enough room for one...

Courthouse

Courthouse

This weekend proved to be pretty fruitless for me as far as shooting goes. The weather was less than cooperative and I just wasn’t feeling very creative stuck in the house. Sunday afternoon things started looking a little better and I took the opportunity to walk through downtown Abingdon, something I don’t do as often as I should. There were a few high level clouds still blowing across the skies above town so I setup on the...
