North Tower

North Tower

When approaching Bristol Motor Speedway from the main highway visitors are greeted by the north tower and its massive letters that let them know they have arrived at BRISTOL. The races at Bristol are among the most anticipated during the Sprint Cup season. The short, half-mile oval with corners that bank past 30° treat fans to some of the most exciting, fast-paced and high-energy racing action of the season. The company I work for (Food...

Speedway Sunset

If there is one thing that I have learned in the short time that I’ve been shooting long exposures it’s that the results are either dead on right out of camera or they’re not. Trial and error is the name of the game but you do eventually begin to get a feel for the lighting, exposure, composition, etc. More times than not the first few frames are off in some way and you end up spending several minutes and exposures creating...

World’s Fastest Half Mile

World’s Fastest Half Mile

A few weekends from now the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit will make it’s way to the high banks of Bristol Motor Speedway. Nearly 180,000 screaming fans will fill these stands as 40 stock cars roar to life in what has come to be known as ‘The Fishbowl’. But for one quiet afternoon in early March there was only one sound that could be heard and that sound was the click of a camera shutter. I only live 20 minutes from the speedway so...

Blown Away

Blown Away

This is a different perspective on the same structure that I posted in Overflow a few days ago. With a little trial and error I was finally able to line up the direction of the clouds with the angle of the pylon. Other than a massive amount of spot removal (the wind was blowing dust everywhere) processing was pretty straightforward, after a few adjustments in Lightroom I passed the frame through Topaz Black and White Effects then Denoise....

Overflow

Overflow

This is an image that I shot a few weekends ago at South Holston Lake. The tower is actually a ‘head-on’ view of one of the enormous pylons that surround the overflow intake adjoining South Holston Dam. The entire structure is massive and is surrounded by a 10-foot fence topped with barbed wire and signs warning of a 250-foot drop to the bottom. The base of the intake is probably 15-feet high and there are at least six of these...

High and Dry

High and Dry

This weekend was marked by heavy cloud cover in our area which made for some great daytime shooting. What made it better, for me anyway, was the high winds that set in on Sunday afternoon. After spending the morning shooting streams in the mountains I decided to close out the day with some long exposure shooting by the lake. I’ve had a shot like this in mind since I bought my filter kit several months ago but the right circumstances of...
