Belly of the Snake - Curt Fleenor Photography

There are some advantages to the sun going down so much earlier in the evening, it provides more opportunities to get in long exposures. This is an image of South Holston Lake with 421 Bridge looming overhead taken around 6:30pm. During the summer months this shot is not possible because the water level is so high there is no place to setup. Highway 421 is locally known as The Snake because of its continuous curves as it crosses Holston Mountain.

Gear: Canon 60D, Canon EF-S 18-135mm, ND4

Settings: 18mm, ISO100, f/11, 30 seconds

Processing: Adobe Lightroom 3, Adobe Photoshop CS5, OnOne PhotoTools 2.6, Topaz Black & White Effects

  2. Nice framing. I really like the contrast between the crisp edges of the girders on the bridge and the velvet like surface of the lake. Perfect for the B&W treatment as well.

  3. A lovely image Curt. I especially like the contrast between the sharp foreground (bridge and rocks) and the softer background. I so need to invest in some ND filters!
