Overflow

This is an image that I shot a few weekends ago at South Holston Lake. The tower is actually a ‘head-on’ view of one of the enormous pylons that surround the overflow intake adjoining South Holston Dam. The entire structure is massive and is surrounded by a 10-foot fence topped with barbed wire and signs warning of a 250-foot drop to the bottom. The base of the intake is probably 15-feet high and there are at least six of these gigantic pylons sitting atop the structure. It really is an impressive sight!
With six angles to choose from it was easy to find one that was perpendicular to the wind. The shot was taken well before sunset so I used both an ND8 and ND4 filter to achieve the 10 second exposure. I processed the image in OnOne PhotoTools and Topaz Black/White Effects then applied an additional preset in Lightroom. This is also the first time I’ve had an opportunity to use Topaz Denoise since purchasing it during their Black Friday sale. It is a really simple yet powerful tool that I would highly suggest to anyone shooting exposures in excess of 5 seconds.
Gear: Canon 60D, Canon EF-S 18-135mm, ND8+ND4
Settings: 24mm, ISO100, f/16, 10 seconds
Processing: Adobe Lightroom 3, Adobe Photoshop CS5, OnOne PhotoTools 2.6, Topaz Black & White Effects, Topaz Denoise

Very nice!

Nice cloud movement. The mono tone is suitably moody.
