Seen Better Days
Dreary skies and rain have become the norm lately and this weekend was no exception. The rain set in on Friday afternoon and stayed through Sunday with only brief periods of time where one could venture out, this photo comes from one of those periods late Sunday afternoon.
I have passed this barn several times before, always making a mental note to come back and shoot it one day, but something else always seemed to bump it down the list. Sunday afternoon I happened to be driving by while it wasn’t raining and figured this was as good a time as any! Hauling my tripod out onto the muddy roadside I setup and fired off as many brackets as I could. Only minutes after packing up and getting back on the road the rain began to fall again and this time it didn’t stop until well after dark.
I’m not sure if the lesson here is that “an opportunity will arise at the right moment” or “if you put something off long enough eventually you’ll get to it”! Either way, I finally got to shoot this spot and I’ve made a written note on my shot list to come back on a nicer day.
The brackets were processed in Lightroom 3.4 and tone mapped in Photomatix 4.
Camera settings: Canon 60D, 18-135mm @ 45mm, ISO100, f/8, 3 +/-2EV brackets with 0EV @ 1/15sec

It is indeed a great shot and the impression I get is of perseverance, even though the cabin is tattered and losing paint, it is still there, overseeing the prairie.

Great pic with the gloomy skies and weather beaten cabin.

Nice composition on this fine shot.
Getting this between the rain was taking advantage of the opportunity and with that small window of time, it really worked out great for you.

It may have seen better days, but at least it’s still standing tall!

That’s true and knowing the area I found it in it’s probably still used for something. Thanks Kristi!
Dreary skies make a great backdrop for an old shack. Nice shot.
