A Tree With A View

Tree with a View - Curt Fleenor Photography

Everyone wants a room with a view and I would imagine that the menagerie of insects that call this tree home think they have one heck of a view! Shelf Lichen grows on the sides of trees in the cool dark recesses of the forest, occasionally you’ll come across a spot where it’s been growing for quite some time and has expanded into a series of shelves…thus it’s name.

I found this particular patch in the Jefferson National Forest near Damascus, Virginia on a tree along a stretch of the Appalachian Trail. Getting down to ground level proved to be a messy endeavor as the previous week had been marked by several days of rain. The low light of the area combined with the range of colors available were the perfect opportunity for some HDR – natural style!

This image is made up of 9-exposures captured at +/-1EV. The frames were post-processed in Lightroom 3 with tonemapping performed in Photomatix 4.

Camera settings: Canon Rebel XS, ISO100, 55mm, f/5.6
