Rule of Thirds
Vehicles from the mid-1900′s were covered in countless extravagant accents – large hood ornaments, sweeping taillight fins, over-sized fenders, tons of chrome – you name it and there was probably a car that had it incorporated in some form! I don’t know what model vehicle this was but the arrangement of three chrome encircled exhaust ports really caught my eye.
I think what most interested me was the simplicity of them…three circles on a solid background. The number 3 resonates throughout history, across civilizations and religions and is of a particular importance to photographers. The designer probably had a much different thought process as he added these shiny accents, maybe not, but they are striking nonetheless.

Love this. I talked today on my post about breaking the rule of thirds.
I would’ve never guessed it was a car.
The amazing textures you got make it look like some drainage pipes.
Really, I am stunned by the textures.
Great, simple composition. Love the texture and repeating patterns.
I like it..good use of numbers and pattern!
Really nice shot. Simple and effective. Really digging the rust texture. Nice!
I love old cars. The designers always seem to put a lot more love into making the cars look exquisite, versus looking all sleek and smooth. Very cool find man!
3 circular ports along the upper fender of a car has been a trademark of the Buick automobile. This has evolved into oval and square shapes over the years but 3 objects have always appeared on this particular line of car.
If this wonderful shot is from a car fender, it’s likely an old Buick.
Nice shot!
Thanks Jimi – that’s some cool info! I forgot to note the make of vehicle when I was shooting and was lost when I started writing the post.
Excellent!! I love the impact of the simplicity and contrast in the light and shadows.
Nice composition and processing; there are some really nice textures here.
Cool post, well found shot, excellent processing
