Crossing Over - Curt Fleenor Photography

This is another image of the bridge from yesterday’s post Bridge Over Calm Waters that crosses the Holston River and takes you into Osceola Recreation Area at South Holston Dam. After I had finished shooting from below the bridge, I thought I would try to capture some images from topside.

One of my many goals for my photography this year is to create more visual depth in my images and I thought this bridge could provide me with an opportunity work on this. We have very few roads or bridges in this area that are straight enough to allow you to create an image with a true vanishing point so we have to make the best of what we’ve got…and what we’ve got are plenty of roads and bridges that disappear over hills and around curves!

The whole idea of a “recreation area” is to provide an escape from the stresses of everyday life without the need to pack a tent and head out into the deep woods. For me, this image conveys a sense of the everyday disappearing into nature with the roadway seeming to meld into the trees and the mountains beyond.

As always, your feedback is much appreciated!

The brackets for this image were processed in Lightroom 3.3 and tone mapped in Photomatix 4.

Camera settings: Canon 60D, 18-135mm @ 19mm, ISO320, f/8, 3-brackets handheld with 0EV @ 1/125sec

  1. Great capture. Perfect processing and composition

  2. this is a good shot..good job !!!!!!

  3. Nice vanishing point, check. Whats your next goal?

    • Thanks Ryan! My next goal is to start expanding out of my comfort zone of objects and landscapes. I’ve already shot a few family events and tried to make the experience as close to a real session as I know how right now with digital images, a DVD and prints afterwards. I wasn’t sure I’d like it to much but to be honest I really enjoyed it.

  4. Great composition. Looks like a great place to shoot.

    • Thanks Jason! It is a great place to shoot and I’m always finding something new.

  5. Love the contrast of concrete and the forest. Your comp is great as the highway takes you to the forest that is lit by the sun.

    • Thanks Chris! I’ve must have been across this bridge a hundred times but only recently began to see that contrast, I guess my ‘photographer’s eye’ is starting to develop!

  6. I think that you achieved your goal. You lead us into the forest but there is a sense of mystery as to what lies beyond! The reflection in the river make you want to pause before continuing your journey. Beautiful color Curt!

    • Thank you Barbara! I feel like everything I’ve been learning over the last year is finally coming together.
