Evening Graze - Curt Fleenor Photography

Other than a few squirrels, I didn’t see any animal life of any kind while on my sojourn across the Blue Ridge a few weeks ago. The huge influx of noisy tourists was probably more to blame than anything but occasionally I would come across a field with a few horses lazily grazing. On the last day of my trip, I passed a field with a beautiful split rail fence that had a few horses munching on the cool, evening grass.

The sun had just finished dropping behind the trees and was casting a warm glow across the field. I was actually just a few miles from the exit that I would have to take to head home so I stopped to grab a few frames before packing up for good. As I walked up to the fence, two of the three horses became suddenly camera shy and walked well outside of my view but this one was a little less concerned.

These ended up being the last images that I would capture on this trip and they turned out to be some of the best.

  3. An excellent composition. A like the fence acting as the foreground interest providing a contrast in textures between the wood in the fence and the grass whilst the black and white horse provides a contrast in colors between it and the leaves on the trees. Very nice.

  4. What a great composition – the fence adds foreground interest but doesn’t overpower the picture. And that’s because the colors are great and the horse is really well caught – how long did you have to wait before it turned it’s head to the side – that’s the clincher!

    • Thank you!! I didn’t have to wait long – once she realized that I was just watching she went back to eating and ignored me completely.
