Foggy Mountain Sunset
One evening last week, my son and I took off to get some shots of the sunset over South Holston Lake. It had been a really hot day and as we got closer you could tell that it had been raining. The first thing I thought was “Oh yeah….fog”! As we crossed the bridge we saw it, the entire river valley was covered with a thick layer of fog just laying over the surface of the river. Forgetting about the sunset for a few minutes, we pulled off at the first access ramp an headed for the water.
I wasn’t sure how well fog and HDR would get along but I was willing to grab several brackets and find out. I was very surprised at how well Photomatix handled the brackets then after a little masking in Elements and some brush work in Lightroom things were starting to look pretty good. I followed it up with some manual tweaking in Topaz Adjust and voila! Overall, I’m very pleased with the result and have another shot ready to go for tomorrow.
Camera settings: Canon 60D, Canon EF-S 18-135mm Lens
, 24mm, ISO100, f/11, 9-brackets
Processing: Adobe Lightroom 3, Photomatix Pro
, Photoshop Elements

Great timing, sensational capture and spot-on processing. Elegant image.

Wow, nice shot Curt! I like the way the blend of warm and cold tones came out in the shot. The fog is magical too. – Nice.

Looks great Curt! I didn’t have as good an experience with fog in Photomatix. Good lesson too!
