Rising out of the water like a forgotten castle spire surrounded by an immense moat, the crane tower adjacent to South Holston Dam is a reminder that that the lake is not just for recreation. While it stands idle most of the time, it is still occasionally used to load and unload equipment for the hydroelectric plant that lies beneath the enormous earthen dam.

On this afternoon, the sunset was casting a brilliant orange glow against the billowing clouds passing over the mountains beyond the lake. The sun was low enough that the waters east of the dam were already in shadow creating a dark mirror for reflecting the sky above.

Camera settings: Canon 60D, Canon EF-S 18-135mm Lens, 24mm, ISO100, f/11, 3-brackets

Processing: Adobe Lightroom 3, Photomatix Pro
