Misty Morning - Curt Fleenor Photography

Saturday afternoon I packed up the Subaru and left for an overnight camping trip at Mount Rogers. My sole reason for staying overnight was to be there at sunrise the next morning and since the locations I had picked out were inside the park an overnight stay was the only way to go. When I started out Sunday morning, I was disappointed to find that my first location was inaccessible before 9 a.m. so I headed to my fallback spot to get setup. If you saw Friday’s Phone Pic you’ll recognize the scene as Sugarland Overlook; my first choice was from atop the Twin Pinnacles.

The wind was blowing pretty hard and the cloud layer overhead was changing quickly. As the sun began to break I could see that the cloud layer extended all the way to the horizon. Luckily, the fast moving clouds occasionally cleared and let me get some shots of the sun piercing through them. Later, as it began to get brighter, I could see thick bands of fog in the valleys between the mountains. When the sun got high enough in the sky, what I was hoping was about to happen did. The diffused light of the morning sun hit the green of the mountains creating a purple tint and the fog reflected an orange glow between them. This is what I had came to see! This effect doesn’t last long but I had enough time to snap off a few frames before the sky began to brighten and the moment was past.

Camera settings: Canon 60D, Canon EF-S 18-135mm Lens, 48mm, ISO100, f/16, 9-brackets
