Venting Atmosphere
I’ve been pretty busy over the last week and as a result haven’t been able to get out as much during the evenings as I would like. In fact, there have been a few nights when it was already dark when I made it home. Throw a family reunion weekend into the mix and the image archive begins to run pretty low. So today’s image takes me in a completely different direction from where I’ve been focusing over the last month.
I spent the first half of Saturday playing a round of golf with visiting family and the thought of getting out and shooting afterwards didn’t really appeal to me very much…I was beat! So later that evening I decided to experiment and pulled my camera and tripod into the driver’s seat of 2010 Subaru Forester. My thought was to just get some time in with my 50mm prime, play with depth of field and the curves in the dash.
After a few shots, I really began to get interested in the results and decided to do a little reflector work too. I brought out my 5-n-1 round reflector and tried all of the surfaces and the diffuser panel. This shot uses the reflector to block light coming in through the windshield with the black side facing down. Out of all of the shots I like this one the most because of the subtle shadows where the dash meets the door.
I did very little work in post for this image, just some minor spot removal, a slight crop and a pass through PhotoTools to apply one of the Polycontrast black and white presets (my dash is two-tone graphite anyway). Oh and my car is hardly ever this clean, I wiped down the console before I got started!
Camera settings: Canon 60D, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens, 50mm, ISO100, f/2.8, 1/60 second
Processing: Adobe Lightroom 3, Adobe Photoshop CS5, OnOne PhotoTools 2.6

I had already made up my mind what to write while i was reading your story, but your very last line ruined that for me…lol
Love the shot, Curt.

I agree with Edith. Great shot Curt! Enjoyed the back story. I’ve got to get me a small reflector.
Nice shot. Well done. The shot looks straight out of a car brochure.
