Headstock - Curt Fleenor Photography

Today’s image is the headstock of the guitar we’ve seen all week. This was taken against a black background with a white diffuser panel placed at camera right to filter the natural lighting. I held a 5-n-1 reflector above the guitar with the black side down to flag any stray light and create a deeper shadow along the top right of the image. This took a few tries and I finally resorted to using the 10 second shutter timer so I had enough time to position the reflector.

I was able to keep the original background so no masking was needed this time. I cleaned up some blemishes in the wood using the Content Aware enabled healing brush in Photoshop. By the way, Content Aware healing has to be the most amazing little tool ever…period! In PhotoTools, I applied and adjusted the Magic Portrait Fixer preset before moving back into Lightroom where I used one of Matt Kloskowski’s Focal Point portrait presets to add a little boost the bottom right. I did some minor sharpening and a bit of noise removal before exporting.

Camera settings: Canon 60D, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens, 50mm, ISO100, f/2.8, 1/4 second

Processing: Adobe Lightroom 3, Adobe Photoshop CS5, OnOne PhotoTools 2.6
