White Noise
Today’s image is another in a set of guitar images that I been using for experimenting and building my processing chops! The setup for this one was pretty simple as I was aiming for a more high-key shot this time. It was shot about 10 a.m. in the middle of my living room with all of the blinds open, a white panel behind the guitar and the diffuser panel from a 5-n-1 reflector directly behind the camera.
As with yesterday’s image, I used a mask to replace the white panel portion with a pure white background. In retrospect, maybe I should have opted for a less brilliant fill but pure white fit with the idea I had at the time. I opened a few textures and applied them one at a time looking for one that would give just the right ‘used’ look to the guitar body without being too busy. Afterwards, the whole thing was sent to PhotoTools where I applied and adjusted the Dream White preset. Once back in Lightroom I applied a very slight vignette.
I really like the dreamy effect that the PhotoTools preset had on the edge of the guitar body where it meets the background and I think the texture gives the body a water-stained feel. What did I learn? It’s much easier to select a white background than a black one and the right texture can be hard to find!
Camera settings: Canon 60D, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens, 50mm, ISO100, f/2.8, 1/13 second
Processing: Adobe Lightroom 3, Adobe Photoshop CS5, OnOne PhotoTools 2.6

Love how the dreamy white background and the curve of the guitar dove-tails to create a visually pleasing composition. Very effective contrast Curt.
